An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck Leh in Ladakh early Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor occurred at 6:05 am at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located at 36.881 degrees north latitude and 74.402 degrees east longitude, the NCS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage to buildings following the earthquake.

In a post on X, the NCS said the earthquake was recorded in Leh, Ladakh, at 6:05:15 am.

The quake was shallow, with its depth recorded at 10 kilometres. Shallow earthquakes can cause stronger shaking at the surface because seismic waves travel a shorter distance before reaching the ground.
