Waqf Governance
The recent closure of the upload window for the UMEED Central Portal marks a milestone in India’s long-pending effort to bring Waqf governance into the digital era.
Launched during the summer of this year, the portal represents one of the most ambitious attempts by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs to centralise information, streamline processes, and enhance transparency in the management of Waqf assets nationwide.
Its completion on 6 December 2025, in accordance with the UMEED Act, 1995 and Supreme Court directives, signals the seriousness of the government’s intent.
Credit must be given to the Ministry’s sustained push: nationwide workshops, zonal meetings, a dedicated technical helpline, and over 20 review sessions led by the Secretary ensured steady momentum.
These efforts helped states and UTs navigate the complexities of digitisation, a task often hindered by uneven institutional readiness.
While the upload phase has concluded, the real work begins now. Verification, data cleansing, and institutional strengthening will determine whether UMEED becomes merely a database or a transformative governance tool. If effectively carried forward, this initiative could redefine transparency and efficiency in the stewardship of Waqf properties across India.
