Recently Central Government has indicated that Jammu and Kashmir will get special attention and the restoration of Statehood would be done at the appropriate time. Reacting to this time-line by the Central Government, Farooq Abdullah in a recent interview emphasized that restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is essential for upholding the Constitution.

Abdullah criticized the central government’s decision to convert Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. He questioned the assertions of the Central Government that by converting Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories it has benefitted the people.

He expressed disappointment over the vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha and in the Assembly as the by-elections are due for some seats. He said that Election Commission’s role in this matter is questionable. He emphasized the importance of respecting the Constitution and restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, allowing the residents to have more autonomy and decision-making power.

National Conference led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir has been demanding complete restoration of statehood for the smooth functioning of their government and to fulfill the promises done by them to the people at the time of elections.
