Inclement weather and heavy rains have triggered flash floods in the hilly areas of Jammu districts especially in the Poonch district.

Officials said that flash floods were triggered by heavy rains in Surankote town of Poonch on Monday, forcing authorities to close all educational institutions and making announcements to the residents to be alert.

Heavy rains triggered a flash flood situation in Surankote town and the water entered into the residential houses, commercial establishments and shops.

Initial reports from Surankote have suggested damage to the properties including houses and shops while many vehicles were also damaged in floods.

Authorities have already issued advisories to the people living in the hilly areas of Jammu region not to venture out of their homes or move near to the nallahs.

The traders of Surankote already protested and have claimed heavy damages to their commercial establishments by the flood waters. The resident has been demanding a sewerage treatment plant in the Surankote town for years but the authorities have paid any attention to their demands.
