Mirwaiz not allowed for Friday prayers, triggering protest inside and outside the Masjid

Several civilians were injured as the police dispersed protestors outside the Jamia Masjid after the Friday prayers and several media persons especially with cameras were injured in police action.

Police and witnesses said that clashes took place within the Masjid and also outside, as the news reached downtown that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has not been released from house detention.

Earlier the reports said that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been released from house detention after spending 20 months under house arrest. He was put under house arrest while more of the separatist leaders including many youth were detained and sent to different jails outside Jammu and Kashmir.

Witnesses said that police showered pellets on the protestors in downtown in order to disperse them as they indulged in stone pelting. In these street battles between the police and protestors were injured including a woman.
