For the first time, Srinagar-Leh highway has been opened in a record short time by BRO even as they cleared the way amid heavy snow on both sides of the road.

This time this strategic highway remained closed only for two months and the efforts of the men and machinery on the ground have been lauded by the government.

The highway was thrown open for traffic after remaining closed for 58 days due to snowfall, a Border Roads Organization (BRO) spokesman told the media.

With the opening of the road government allowed vehicles carrying essential commodities to move from Srinagar to Ladakh as there is a lot of shortage of such items due to the closure of highways.

The spokesman said the pass was declared opened officially by DG of BRO Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhary. The opening of the road was managed despite fresh snowfall in Zojila pass on Saturday, and it has not hindered the work.

People of Leh and Kargil are demanding a fair weather road and the government has already started the work on the Zojila tunnel so that they have not to suffer for the essential items. Earlier this road from Srinagar to Zojila used to get closed for six months and the BRO has this time in a record short time cleared the snow and allowed the vehicles to move from Srinagar to Leh with essential commodities including fresh vegetables and poultry items.
