Highway shut
Even after five days, the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the counter is closed and authorities are only claiming that their men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the highway.
There are many questions in the public circles for which the government has no answers. There was a prediction of heavy snowfall from the past several weeks and they were not prepared to take the remedial measures.
How come the government was so complacent that they allowed 4500 truckloads of essential commodities to get struck up on the highway and could not clear them before the snowfall? There are media reports that most of these trucks were stopped by traffic cops without any reason even before rains and snow.
The truck drivers have been complaining to the authorities about the attitude of traffic cops all along the Srinagar-Jammu highway as they have alleged many times in past that they are stopped at many points for days together without any reasons.
Many of them have alleged that there is a lot of corruption all along the Srinagar-Jammu highway and their allegations have assumed significance due to the fact that thousands of trucks remained stranded on the highway in spite of the fact the government was fully aware about the heavy snowfall and could have cleared the trucks earlier.
