Following the conclusion of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday said it was emphasised that India and China should “strictly respect and observe” the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and that both sides agreed to maintain communication at diplomatic and military levels to resolve the existing situation peacefully.

The WMCC meeting came in the backdrop of the violent face-off between India and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, which left 20 Indian soldiers dead. China, too, the Indian Army had said, suffered fatal casualties. The delegations for this meeting, held two days after their Corps Commanders reached a “mutual consensus to disengage” troops, were led by diplomats from the foreign ministries of both countries for maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas. “The two sides discussed in detail the developments in the India-China border areas in particular the situation in Eastern Ladakh. The Indian side conveyed its concerns on the recent developments in Eastern Ladakh, including on the violent face-off in Galwan Valley area on 15th June that had resulted in casualties,” the MEA said.

Meanwhile, Army Chief General MM Naravane, earlier in the day, visited forward areas in Ladakh, a day after he met the soldiers, injured in the Galwan Valley clashes.

Elsewhere in Moscow, Indian and Chinese troops, along with contingents from other countries, participated in the Victory Day military parade in the Russian capital of Moscow on Wednesday. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the event, the 75th anniversary of the Victory Day celebration to mark the end of Second World War, along with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Fenghe. Officials told The Indian Express the two would not hold discussions. Russia also ruled out mediating between the two countries, saying India and China did not need any kind of assistance to resolve their disputes.
