People of Jammu and Kashmir have been waiting from the past ten months for the lifting of restrictions on the high speed internet as the government first banned even the telephones including landlines in Kashmir valley and finally restored phones and internet after more than six months but with curbs on high speed internet.

After a lot of appeals from doctors, civil society members and student community to the UT administration of Jammu and Kashmir asking for 4G internet services especially during the lockdown period covid-19. Finally many people from Kashmir decided to approach the Supreme Court for the restoration of internet services and after a lot of discussions and hearings the court finally directed the Union Home Secretary to head a committee and decided about restoration of 4G services in Jammu and Kashmir.

Now the petitioner has moved a separate application and a writ petition in the Supreme Court pleading for the contempt of court as they have felt that even the committee has not been formed so far.

Even the UT administration 27 May 2020, passed an order extending the ban on the high speed internet clearly showing that the government is in favor of a ban on 4G services.

The application has sought an interim direction to the authority to restore 4G mobile internet services in Jammu and Kashmir, pending disposal of the plea and also the decision by the special committee.

In its 11 May order, the Supreme Court had said it was desirable to have better internet services in the UT in view of the pandemic.
