Defence minister meets CDS, three service chiefs after India-China clash

Srinagar: Union defence minister, Rajnath Singh held a meeting with Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and three service chiefs and External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar to discuss the recent developments in eastern Ladakh.

The meeting was held after a “violent face-off” last night between India and China at Galwan Valley, one of the four standoff points in the eastern Ladakh sector. In the face-off, a commanding officer of Indian army unit and two soldiers were killed.

As per the Indian army statement, “During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.”

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, said “India troops crossed the border line twice on Monday provoking and attacking Chinese personnel resulting in serious physical confrontation between border forces on the two sides,” reported an international news agency, AFP.

After the face-off, Army Chief, General Manoj Mukund Naravane also cancelled the visit to Pathankot.
