The Union Territory of Ladakh has turned out to be a “role model” in the fight against the coronavirus as it is showing the potential to be among the first to be “Covid free” in the country.

Ladakh reported the first case of the coronavirus on March 7. After the initial surge to 13 cases of the virus, the region reported only two positive coronavirus cases in the past 22 days till Sunday.

In Ladakh, 160 persons had returned from Iran, while the number of people with a foreign travel history is 530.

Samphel said: “Twelve persons have been discharged from the hospital. This has been possible due to the devotion of our doctors and health workers, support of the two Councils and the public, which has followed the rules of social distancing and isolation in letter and spirit.”

He said the first patient of coronavirus was from Chuchot Gongma village and had returned from Iran. “The whole village was cordoned off and a containment zone was formed immediately on March 8,” he said.
