500 fuel tankers stranded on highway
SRINAGAR;-More than 500 tankers carrying petrol and diesel are stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu highway after a massive landslide blocked the road at Moonpasi area.
Inspector general of traffic police Alok Kumar said around 100 petrol and diesel tankers crossed Jawahar tunnel by Monday evening, but about 500 more, besides 900 LMVs, were stranded at various places along the road.
Kumar said the landslide that struck at 11am is yet to be cleared. He said shooting stones at some places were also creating trouble. The decision on traffic movement would be taken on Tuesday morning, he added.
Earlier on Friday, the 270-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the world, was blocked by a major landslide at Maroog on Friday, hours after authorities allowed traffic from Jammu to Srinagar. The traffic on the highway is plying alternatively from twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu over the past six months to avoid jamming in view of the ongoing work on the four-lane project.
Meanwhile, on Monday, higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall while plains that included Srinagar received rain.
MeT officials have predicted light to moderate rain and snow from Monday evening.GK
