Army pays tributes to slain personnel killed in gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian

Srinagar: Army Monday paid tributes to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, Sena Medal Bar (SM) who was killed in an encounter with militants on Sunday in southern Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Six militants were killed in the gunfight that raged for hours in Batgund village of Kapran area of the district yesterday. A civilian was killed and 68 others injured after the forces fired live ammunition, pellets and tear gas during the clashes.

In a solemn ceremony at BB Cantt, Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks, paid homage to Wani. “In a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the slain,” an army spokesperson said.

Wani, sustained bullet injuries during a fierce operation at Batagund Village in Shopian district. He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Wani had been twice awarded Sena Medal for gallantry in August 2007 and in August 2018.

38 years old Wani had joined the Army in 2004. He belonged to Village Cheki Ashmuji of Kulgam Tehsil in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir and is survived by his wife and two children .
