Weather conditions to improve from Saturday: MeT

Srinagar;The higher reaches of the Valley including the tourist places received a fresh snowfall while as the intermittent rains continued to lash Valley on Friday, bringing the mercury further down.

Director Meteorological (MeT) department, Sonum Lotus said that the higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Drass received a fresh snowfall today while the plains continued to receive intermittent rainfall.

He said that the wet spell in the Valley would continue for the next ten hours.

“The weather would turn pleasant from Saturday,” he said, adding that there is possibility of light rains at isolated places on Saturday as well but the weather would mostly remain dry across the Valley.

Meanwhile, the fresh rains as well as the snowfall led to the closure of various roads that include Srinagar-Jammu highway, Sonamarg-Zojila road and historic Mughal road.

The officials said that the Srinagar-Jammu continued to remain closed since last evening due to the intermittent rains.

“The road is still closed and will thrown open once the rains stop,” he said.

Sonamarg-Zojila road along Srinagar-Leh highway was also closed for the vehicular movement on Friday following the fresh snowfall in the area, officials said, adding that the raod was closed due to the slippery conditions of the roads that triggered due to the fresh accumulated snow.

They added that decision to open the road will be taken after the weather conditions will improve.

They also informed that the historic Mughal road was also closed for the vehicular movement on Friday.

The officials said that the road was closed after rains triggered landslides in Pir-ki-Gali area. (KNS)
