Srinagar,: Amid speculations Hurriyat (G) senior leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai Monday replaced the octogenarian pro-freedom leader Syed Ali Geelani as the new chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH).
Pertinently, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) was formed soon after the first division of All Parties Hurriyat Conference in 2002 following the Sajad Lone controversy.
The development came after a decision by the Majlis-e-Shora (Advisory board) after taking the health and age of Geelani into consideration, sources said.
“Geelani himself urged upon TeH Majlis-e-Shora to take decision in this regard,” sources said adding “Sehrai was nominated as interim chairman until formal elections are conducted”.
Sehrai, a resident of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district is considered as the most confidential of Geelani.
Both Geelani and Sehrai formed TeH in 2004 after an arrangement with Jama’at-e-Islami, both were part of for decades.
A stanch and steadfast pro-freedom leader, Sehrai will now lead TeH, an effective constituent of Hurriyat Conference (G).
