National Voters Day celebrations held across Kashmir Division

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 25: In connection with 8th National Voters day (NVD), various programmes were held across the Kashmir Division to educate new voters regarding the importance of exercising their franchise.

The Day is held every year on January 25 to encourage youngsters, who have reached the age of 18, to participate in the electoral process. The central theme for the 8th voters Day is ‘Accessible Elections’.

In Srinagar, a function was held at Government College for Women, M.A. Road to celebrate the Voters Day. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan attended the function as chief guest, while Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Syed Abid Rashid Shah, Deputy Director Tourism & Nodal Officer SVEEP Wasim Raja, Deputy District Election Officer, all Election Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Election Registration Officers (AEROs), Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other concerned officials were also present on the occasion.

On the Occasion, Divisional Commissioner read the Voter’s Pledge. He highlighted the significance of NVD and said that the Day has two parameters, first Voter’s day and second the foundation day of Election Commission of India.

DC Srinagar, who is also District Election Officer, said that the main aim of celebrating the Day is that democracy should reach grass root level so that more and more people take part in the democratic process.

A total of 9309 newly eligible electors have been enrolled during the recently concluded Special Summary Revision-2018 in District Srinagar, out of which 3532 are male and 5777 are female voters.

Nodal officer SVEEP and Deputy Director Tourism also spoke on the occasion.

At Bandipora, the main function regarding National Voters Day was held at Mini Secretariat Complex in which besides officials from the district administration, hundreds of new voters participated.

District Development Commissioner, Sajjad Hussain, who is also District Election Officer, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The DEO threw light on the significance of the Day and said that the main objective of the Day is to ensure that a maximum number of young voters take part in the political process.

On the occasion, the DEO distributed Election Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) among newly enrolled voters who were seen enthusiastic about receiving the EPICs first time.

The DEO also felicitated two 9th class students of Girls Higher Secondary School Bandipora namely, Uzma Shabir and Aafreen Naseer, who won the recently held National Level Quiz competition organized by Election Commission of India at Jammu.

On the occasion, it was given out that 7258 new voters including 2832 male and 4426 female have been enrolled as on January 1, 2018, in the district. The National Voters’ Day was also observed at Sonawari and Gurez Constituencies also.

At Budgam, the Day was celebrated by organizing a function at Shiekh-ul-Alam Hall in which Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Budgam Mohammad Harun Malik was the  chief guest.

The DEO called for greater participation of the young voters for realizing a progressive society.

Among others, ADC Budgam Mohammad Farooq Dar, Chief Education Officer Budgam, Abdul Rouf Shahhmiri,  and hundreds of Asha and Anganwadi workers attended the function.

Speaking on the occasion, DC said the aim of the function was to create awareness and inspire the young voters about the importance of their participation in the political and democratic process.

Emphasizing on the greater participation of youth in the democratic process, he said that a vote empowers the youth to implement their  ideas for shaping up the future of the nation.

During the function, it was informed that this year 10,846 eligible voters have been added to the voters’ list taking the present number of eligible voters to 460571 in the district.

At Kulgam, a function was held to celebrate the 8th National Voters Day at Town Hall here. Deputy Commissioner, Talat Parvez Rohella was the chief guest on the occasion.

The DC said main aim of celebrating the Day is to strengthen the democratic setup and to pave way for maximum participation of youth electorate.  He said the Day sensitizes all the eligible voters to register themselves so that they can exercise their fundamental right to vote. A large number of first-time voters were given Election Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) on the occasion.

At the function, it was said that about 2084 new voters were registered during the year 2017.

At Kupwara, in connection with the celebration of 8th National Voters Day, an impressive function was organized by the District Election Office, Kupwara wherein the District Election Officer, Kupwara (DDC) Khalid Jahangir participated as chief guest.

Deputy DEO Kupwara G.M. Indrabi, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Mohammad Abdullah Malik, Joint Director Planning(CPO) Imtiyaz Ahmad, Assistant Labour Commissioner, District Social Welfare Officer, District Information Officer, Tehsildars, DFOs, field functionaries of different departments associated with electioneering besides concerned BLOs of Kupwara constituency and newly-registered voters were present on the occasion.

The DEO Kupwara threw light on the importance of National Voters Day and impressed upon the concerned associated with the registration of new voters to conduct more awareness camps. He said that voting plays a vital role in a democratic setup and for this purpose, everybody should play their role.

On this occasion, it was given out that 7911 new voters have been registered, which include 1248 in Karnah,1647 in Kupwara,1393 in Lolab, 2244 in Handwara and 1379 in Langat constituencies.

At Baramulla, an impressive function in connection with the celebration of 8th National Voters day was held today at Dak Bungalow here in which District Election Officer Baramulla, Dr. Naseer Ahmad Naqash was the Chief Guest.

Additional District Development Commissioner Mohammad Qasim Wani, Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Farooq Ahmad Baba, Joint Director Planning AG.Malik, Deputy District Election officer Sameer Jan, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Bashir  Ahmad Bhat, Tehsildar HQ  Irfan Bahadur, Youth Services & Sports Officer Khursheed Ahmad, Co-ordinator NYK, Hakeem Abdul Aziz and a huge gathering of newly-enrolled voters were present on the occasion.

While calling for ensuring 100 percent EPIC ratio in the district, Dr. Naqash stressed upon the fact that celebration of National Voters Day aims at spreading necessary information regarding the right to vote and its importance.

He called for foolproof and transparent electoral registration in the district. It was mentioned that greater participation is necessary for a strong democracy.

It was informed that as per the final roll 2018, the total number of Voters in district Baramulla is 618481. Moreover, the additions during 2018 have been 19149.

At Anantnag, to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process, 8th National Voters Day under the theme “Accessible Elections” was celebrated today.

In this connection, a programme was organised in Dak Bunglow in which hundreds of newly-added voters participated. The young voters were educated about the various stages involved in the election process.

On the occasion, the DEO said that the youth have a potential to learn things quickly. He added that they can educate people regarding the importance of vote and election process vital for the overall development of the country. He said that more and more youth should get themselves registered as voters.

It was given out that 10715 additions including 3735 male and 6980 female voters have been made so far which, while as 5812 deletions and 95.43% EPIC coverage has been achieved in the district till January 2018.

Later a debate on the theme “Accessible Elections” was also organised in which participants from different schools of the district participated.

Among others, ADDC Anantnag, Tehsildar Anantnag, District Social Welfare Officer Anantnag, CEO, Technical Director NIC Anantnag, Deputy District Election Officer Anantnag and other officers of the district attended the function.

At Pulwama, a function was held in the meeting hall at administrative complex DC office to mark the 8th National Voters Day. District Election officer (Deputy Commissioner) Pulwama, Ghulam Mohammad Dar was the chief guest on the occasion.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Rather, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, District Social Welfare Officer, Project Manager DIC who was the nodal officer, Naib Tehsildar election, BLO’S and other district and sectoral officers were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the DEO said that the importance of the National Voters’ Day can be gauged from the fact that it re-affirms the power of the people to determine their own destiny by exercising the freedom to elect their own representatives.

He further said that enthusiastic participation of people in the electoral process is the key to a healthy democracy.

While congratulating officials on getting State Award for Best Electoral Practices, the DEO said that the full credit goes to all the field functionaries who are working at the grass root level and have left no stone unturned in getting the voter registered in the district.

At Ganderbal, the 8th National Voters Day was celebrated at all the headquarters of Assistant Electoral Registration Offices (AERO’s) of the district. The main function was held at Mini Secretariat Ganderbal.

District Development Commissioner Ganderbal Dr. Piyush Singla, who is also District Election Officer, attended the function as chief guest, while Deputy District Election Officer, all Election Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Election Registration Officers (AEROs), Booth Level Officers (BLOs), all District Officers and students from various colleges and schools were present on the occasion.

It was said that as many as 4292 voters who attained the age of 18 years on January 1, 2018, were added to the electoral rolls. The DEO distributed new Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICS) among the newly registered voters.

Highlighting the main aim of observing the Day, the DEO said that such events are important to spread awareness among the people, especially among the youth.

Later in the event awards were distributed among the participants who bagged the Ist, 2nd and 3rd positions in symposium highlighting the importance of National Voters Day.

At Shopian, a function to celebrate the 8th National Voters Day was held where Deputy Commissioner Shopian Mohammad Aijaz, who is also District Election Officer, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Chief Education Officer, (Nodal Officer (SVEEP)) and BLOS, students were also present on the occasion.

The DC Shopian distributed 100 Election Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) among 64 male and 36 female newly-registered voters who have attained the age of 18 years.

The students who were present on the occasion took a pledge that they will cast their vote for the betterment of the country as well as the state without considering religion, caste, creed, language or any inducement.

Similar functions were held in Kargil and Leh districts of the Ladakh region to mark the 8th National Voters Day.
