Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that Rohingya Muslim refugees in India could pose a security threat to India.

“Rohingyas are illegal immigrants. Security threat can’t be ruled out,” said Rajnath while responding to a question in Jammu on the deportation of Rohingya Muslims who have taken shelter in India.

Singh said the government of India had adopted a “humane” approach towards migrants and displaced people but it was strongly against illegal immigration.

Singh’s statement comes a day after UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein flayed any attempts by India to deport Rohingyas to Myanmar when the ethnic minority community is facing violence in their country.

“I deplore current measures in India to deport Rohingyas at a time of such violence against them in their country,” Zeid said.

India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju had on September 5 said Rohingyas were illegal immigrants and stand to be deported.

Some 40,000 Rohingyas have settled in India, and 16,000 of them have received refugee documentation, the UN estimates.
