Srinagar-Leh highway reopens after five months

Srinagar, May 12: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, reopened officially today after remaining closed for over five months due to accumulation of snow besides avalanches.
However, some vehicles, majority of them carrying essentials, particularly fresh vegetables were plying from Srinagar to Ladakh during the past few days unofficially. However, only one-way traffic will be allowed at Zojila Pass to avoid any accident and traffic jam, officials said.
Traffic on this difficult portion of the road will be allowed on rotation though elsewhere on the highway vehicles will ply from both sides.
The highway was closed in December last year due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions between Sonmarg and Meenmarg and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia.
