NYT on army role in Kashmir

Srinagar: New York Times in its editorial the titled ‘Cruelty and Cowardice in Kashmir’ has said that security forces were carrying on brutal crackdown on the people of Kashmir and has cautioned New Delhi that such harsh policy will feed more militancy and will alienate people of Kashmir further.
The editorial published on Saturday said that Government of India should ensure that the human rights are protected and respected in Kashmir. The editorial of New York Times has come in the backdrop of appearance of lot of videos showing army and security forces shooting and thrashing people of Kashmir at different places. The video in which a civilian tied to a military vehicle as a human shield has really evoked lot of reactions from the international community and human rights groups across the globe.
The editorial said, “Members of India’s armed forces reached a new low in the long history of alleged human rights abuses” in Kashmir. The editorial further said, “The incident, which came to light when a video spread on social media, provides a gauge of an insurgency that has waxed and waned over nearly three decades in Kashmir”.
While cautioning the government of India to exercise restraint, the editorial said, “ Such posturing will only doom Kashmir to a deadly spiral, where more brutal military tactics will feed more despair and more militancy”.
The editorial has advocated talks especially on the contours of the report submitted by BJP senior leader Yashwant Sinha to the government, urging them to engage with Kashmiris without wasting any time.
