The recent discussions held in both houses of parliament indicate that BJP government is going to keep Jammu and Kashmir as UT for some time more.

During those discussions, it emerged that the central government is silent on the promise of the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and even leader of opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad during the discussion said about the importance for restoration of its statehood, saying the development had halted, there was an increase in unemployment and industries were closing, making survival difficult in both union territories.

He questioned the intentions of the government and asked Union Home Minister that if the present administration is working well why he has merged the cadres.

He even questioned Home Minister for bringing the bill of merging the cadres and said, “You had promised that the statehood will be restored. But bringing this bill creates suspicion that GoI wants to keep J&K permanently a union territory.”

While the delimitation commission is working in Jammu and Kashmir, the holding of assembly elections may not take place unless it decides many reorganizations of many assembly segments in Jammu and Kashmir.
