This pandemic has exposed all the claims of the UT administration of Jammu and Kashmir that they were ready with equipment and hospitals to fight the virus.

The lockdown also brought to the focus how poor is the quality of health services available across Jammu and Kashmir and how important it is to provide health insurance cover for the people especially the common people who have very little money to take care of their health system.

LG Sinha announced that every single resident of the J&K Union Territory will be covered under the Ayushman Bharat Health insurance up to Rs 5 lakh. Besides healthy individuals, the insurance cover will also cover people suffering from fatal illnesses and other ailments.

If this insurance cover is provided to the common people it would be a game changer in the health sector of Jammu and Kashmir and will bring the thousands of families reeling under debt due to the fatal ailments as they had to borrow money for the treatment.

It is not yet known when the government of Jammu and Kashmir will bring health insurance to cover the poor population of urban and rural areas and how a timeline would be fixed for this completion of work on the ground.

Earlier also many governments of the past have announced such health insurance covers but none of such promises were fulfilled on the ground.

There is no denying the fact that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are badly in need of health insurance cover especially in the backdrop of pandemic.
