OIC in focus
OIC has been in news in the recent past especially in the backdrop of their special invitation to foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj for the annual meeting in Abu Dhabi on March 1, 2019. BJP government has come under attack from Congress and other opposition parties for accepting the invite as special observer. Now OIC has called for an emergency meeting of contact group on Kashmir in the backdrop recent Pulwama attack and rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
The “urgent” notice sent to members of the contact group by the Organisation of Islamic Conference secretariat in Jeddah said: “On the request of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan a meeting of the Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir … will be held at the OIC General Secretariat.” According to the notice, the meeting of the contact group will be held at the level of permanent representatives. The meeting is likely to review the actions taken by the Indian government in the aftermath of the attack on security forces in s Pulwama district.
The contact group meeting will precede the 46th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, scheduled for March 1-2 in Abu Dhabi. For the very first time, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has been invited to address the inaugural plenary of the OIC foreign ministers meeting. On March 1st, the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan could also come face to face in Abu Dhabi.
The OIC define itself as the collective voice of the Muslim world with the objective to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in order to promote the international peace and harmony among various people of the world. In the past, the group has criticized India’s human rights abuses in its part of Kashmir.
The invitation to India to the Organisation of Islamic Conference meeting clashes with the recent visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Pakistan and India. The Crown Prince who has advocated a peaceful resolution to settle the differences between the two countries.
