Farooq Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference chief, has criticized the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, calling it “anti-constitutional”. He isn’t the only one with concerns; the CPI(M) has also raised similar issues, likening the special intensive revision of electoral rolls to the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The party has urged the Election Commission to abandon the process.
Abdullah’s comments come amidst a backdrop of controversy surrounding electoral processes in India. As a prominent politician, he has been vocal about issues affecting the country’s democratic fabric, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah has accused the Central Government of betraying the people and promoting hatred through certain media outlets.
The Election Commission of India, as an autonomous constitutional authority, oversees election processes, including updating electoral rolls. However, critics argue that such revisions can disenfranchise certain groups, particularly vulnerable populations. The concerns raised by Abdullah and the CPI(M) highlight the need for transparency and fairness in electoral processes.
