Drought like Situation
A severe drought-like situation is affecting South Kashmir, particularly districts like Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Shopian, where hundreds of acres of farmland are facing a serious irrigation crisis. Farmers in the region are struggling due to the prolonged dry spell, which has resulted in low water levels in irrigation canals, leaving paddy fields parched and crops withering away.
The situation is dire, with farmers in villages like Hakura, Palpora, Khoshipora, and Bragam in Anantnag district witnessing their paddy land crack under the scorching heat. Farmers are distressed, and their livelihoods are at stake. “If we lose this crop, it’s not just a loss of crops — it’s a loss of livelihood, dignity, and sustenance for thousands,” said a farmer from Anantnag.
The Irrigation Department has acknowledged the crisis and is attempting to deploy available water resources efficiently. However, farmers are urging the administration to declare drought-hit zones and ensure the supply of water through mechanical means where possible. Some farmers are being forced to irrigate their fields manually, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The authorities need to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of the drought and ensure the well-being of the farmers. The situation demands a prompt response to prevent further damage to the crops and the livelihoods of the people dependent on agriculture.
