Drop in Registration
The recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir has led to a 10.19% drop in registrations for the Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 9. According to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, around 236,000 pilgrims had registered before the April 22 attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Despite this decline, Sinha assured that adequate security arrangements have been put in place for the annual pilgrimage.
A robust security system has been established at base camps, with security forces conducting area domination and mock drills to handle any eventuality. The administration has also increased the number of police officials and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel to ensure the safety of pilgrims. All service providers have undergone verification to minimize potential security risks.
The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has initiated a reverification process for pilgrims who registered before the attack, with over 85,000 pilgrims reconfirming their participation so far. Pilgrims have provided largely positive feedback about their experience, appreciating the steps taken by the administration and shrine board. Despite the decline in registrations, Lieutenant Governor Sinha expressed hope that the numbers would pick up, given the confidence-building measures taken by the administration and security forces.
