The Jammu and Kashmir government has made knowledge of Urdu a mandatory requirement for the recruitment of Naib Tehsildars. This decision has sparked controversy and opposition from various quarters, with some arguing that it may disadvantage candidates from Jammu region who may not be familiar with Urdu.
The revenue record in J&K is maintained in Urdu language, written in the Nastaliq script, making it essential for Naib Tehsildars to be well-versed in the language to perform their duties efficiently. Knowledge of Urdu will prove beneficial not only to the individual but also to the revenue administration and the public at large.
However, others argue that with five official languages in J&K, including Dogri, Kashmiri, and Hindi, making Urdu compulsory may be discriminatory. The government’s decision has led to confusion and worry among aspirants, with some calling for a reconsideration of the requirement.
The outcome of this decision will have a significant impact on the recruitment process and the future of aspiring Naib Tehsildars in Jammu and Kashmir.
