Security concerns
The recent Pahalgam terror attack has raised concerns about the security of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, a significant pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. Intelligence agencies have identified The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as the group responsible for the attack and warned of potential further strikes during the yatra.
Security forces have been strategically deployed along the route to ensure rapid response capabilities, and the area has been divided into smaller security zones for comprehensive coverage. Due to the elevated risk, helicopter services for pilgrims have been suspended, and pilgrims will have to reach the holy cave shrine on foot or by using pony or palki services. This decision aims to minimize potential vulnerabilities and ensure the safety of the pilgrims.
The attack has sparked fear among tourists and pilgrims, with some canceling their plans to visit Pahalgam and participate in the yatra. Inderjit Khajuria, Chairman of All Jammu Hotels and Lodges Association, believes the attack could adversely impact the yatra and has appealed to the Centre to hand over the pilgrimage security to the army. The concern is understandable, given the importance of the yatra and the potential economic impact on the region.
Security officials suspect that the militants could be hiding in the Pir Panjal jungle region and may be planning further attacks. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Director General of the CRPF GP Singh visited Jammu and Kashmir to review the preparedness of security arrangements for the yatra. The authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the pilgrims and prevent any further incidents.
The situation remains tense, and the security forces are on high alert. The government is taking all necessary measures to ensure the success of the yatra and protect the pilgrims. Despite the challenges, the pilgrimage is expected to proceed with enhanced security measures in place.
