New opportunities
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that two projects can be taken up in J&K amid the ongoing suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).
The projects are being discussed with the Centre, with progress being made in the Power and Housing & Urban Affairs ministries.
The suspension of the IWT has opened up opportunities for new projects, including the revival of the Tulbul Navigation Project, which was conceived in 1981 but shelved due to Pakistan’s objections.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar confirmed that the Centre will revive the Tulbul project and prepare a detailed project report soon.
CM Omar mentioned that Jammu and Kashmir is still in debt due to the difference between power procurement and supply rates, with the government supplying power to consumers at concession rates.
The two projects that can be taken up include one in Kashmir and the other in Jammu, with talks ongoing with the central government regarding their implementation.
These projects are expected to bring much-needed economic growth and development to J&K.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes as a positive development for J&K, which has been facing several challenges in terms of economic growth and development.
