SRINAGAR: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned an additional Rs 25 crore for the reconstruction of 2,060 houses in Jammu and Kashmir’s border districts that were damaged in Pakistani shelling and firing following Operation Sindoor. The decision follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of enhanced compensation for affected families.

As per the special compensation package announced by the Prime Minister, Rs 2 lakh will be provided for each fully damaged house and Rs 1 lakh for each partially damaged one. The Ministry has confirmed that similar assistance will also be extended to affected households in the border areas of Punjab.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited Poonch on May 29 and 30, personally handed over appointment letters on compassionate grounds to the kin of those killed in the cross-border firing. The Ministry stated that compensation for shelling damages was provided immediately after the incidents.

Following Operation Sindoor, several instances of Pakistani shelling were reported in the border regions of Jammu and Kashmir, causing significant damage to residential buildings, schools, religious places—including mosques, temples, and gurudwaras—and commercial establishments.

According to official figures, a total of 3.25 lakh people were evacuated from border areas as a precautionary measure. Approximately 15,000 individuals were housed in 397 shelter sheds and temporary accommodation centres equipped with basic facilities such as food, water, healthcare, and electricity.

The administration deployed 394 ambulances across all border districts to ensure swift medical assistance, with 62 ambulances stationed in Poonch alone. Additionally, 2,818 civil defence volunteers were mobilised to support health services, fire and emergency response, livestock care, and the distribution of essential supplies.

The latest funding is part of the government’s ongoing effort to address the humanitarian impact of the recent border hostilities and ensure a timely recovery for the affected civilian population.
