The Election Commission of India is expected to announce the schedule for the assembly elections today. It is expected to be announced in a presser at 3 pm.

Sources said the elections will be announced for Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.

Haryana’s legislative assembly term concludes in November 2024, while Jammu and Kashmir, which has been without an elected assembly for five years, faces a deadline to hold elections by September 30, 2024, following a Supreme Court ruling.

Recent developments suggest that elections in both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana may occur simultaneously. Election Commission officials visited both regions earlier this month to assess preparedness. Following these visits, a meeting was convened with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Wednesday to address security concerns for Jammu and Kashmir, where the security of all candidates remains a high priority due to the sensitive situation in the region.

Jammu and Kashmir has 90 berths in the assembly after a fresh delimitation post-2019 when Article 370 was read down and the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two federally governed Union territories.

Sources indicate that the polls will be a five to six-phase affair and will start in late September to conclude by the first week of November 2024.
