After 5 months of complete shutdown, authorities in a phased manner, decided to give internet access to the people but not beyond the 2G speed. During the pandemic of COVID-19 doctors have been pleading with authorities for the restoration of high speed internet for the better treatment of patients.
As authorities delayed the process, some people through an NGO approached Supreme Court for the restoration 4G services in Jammu and Kashmir. There has been lot of discussions in the court as the government has connected 4G with national security.
Even today government of India told Supreme Court that it was for the sake of national security that they were not restoring 4G speed as it will encourage anti- national elements.
Government has been pleading with courts that it would be in the interest national security not to give high speed internet to people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is now up to Supreme Court how they will decide about this matter as Supreme Court has already declared that internet access is a fundamental right.
