Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who has remained allay of BJP is likely to be released after eight months of detention. She was arrested on August 5, last year along with several former chief ministers, ministers and lawmakers. Her release was being opposed by the local administration and intelligence agencies, describing her as most vocal and scheming to breach peace in Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti was instrumental in mobilizing all mainstream political parties on August 4, last year when they finally signed jointly a declaration known as Gupkar declaration at the residence of Farooq Abdullah, saying that they will protect the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to news agency IANS Mehbooba Mufti would be released today by the authorities, however the officials have neither confirmed nor denied this report of her release. Omar Abdullah who was released yesterday tweeted for the release of Mehbooba Mufti. In a tweet he said, “It is callous and cruel to continue detention of Mehbooba Mufti and others at time like this. There was never much justification to detain everyone in first place and none at all to keep them detained as the country enters a three week lockdown. I hope Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release her”.
