Jammu doctor among 21 infected

As many as 21 fresh Covid cases were reported in J&K on Sunday, taking the total count of positive cases in the UT to 245, including 235 active cases.

Of the 21 new cases, 17 tested positive in Kashmir Valley and four in Jammu province, including a doctor and a Tablighi contact, who interacted with attendees of the Nizammudin congregation.

“21 new cases of Covid reported in J&K today. 17 from Kashmir division and 4 from Jammu division. Total number of positive cases now 245,” Rohit Kansal, Principal Secretary (Planning) and spokesman for the J&K administration, tweeted.

Out of the total 235 active cases in the UT, 191 are in Kashmir division and 44 are in Jammu province.

With 58 positive cases, Srinagar district tops the list of maximum cases in J&K, followed by Bandipora with 42 cases.

The fresh cases reported from the Valley are from Kupwara (7), Baramulla (4), Ganderbal (3), Bandipora (2), and Kulgam (1).

As per official reports, 51,320 persons have been enlisted for observation while 9,153 persons are under home quarantine, 433 are in hospital quarantine and 29,718 persons are under home surveillance.

According to the official data, 3,600 samples were tested of which 3,355 were negative and 245 tested positive. Six positive cases have been discharged from the hospitals while four coronavirus patients have died.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) and district police heads to strictly implement restrictions in all 77 red zones declared in J&K.

While reviewing the situation, he directed the DCs of active districts, where red zones have been declared, to go for complete lockdown to contain the disease. District administration, in close coordination with the district police, should ensure that there is zero movement of people, Subrahmanyam stated.

The Chief Secretary also directed officials to conduct door-to-door survey and extensive fumigation in all red zones, besides early issuance of operational guidelines. Also, essential supplies must be ensured and DCs should plan the delivery of essentials so that people do not face any inconvenience, he maintained.

He also asked the authorities concerned to set up check points at both sides of Jawahar Tunnel and directed DCs of Poonch and Shopian to set up check posts, one at Poshana and another at Peer Ki Gali on Mugal Road, to regulate vehicular traffic, once the road is open for vehicular traffic.

To ensure that rural economy is not affected, the Chief Secretary asked officials to allow farmers to carry on with their agriculture operations and directed the DCs and SSPs to coordinate with the Secretary, Agriculture, for smooth continuation of agriculture and allied operations in their districts.
