Telangana reports its first Covid-linked death; cases in India cross 900 mark

The Health Ministry Saturday confirmed 918 novel Covid-19 cases across the country, including 79 recovered and 19 deaths. This is the fourth day of the 21-day national lockdown imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Kerala and Telangana on Saturday reported its first COVID-19 death, while Gujarat recorded another death.

In order to ensure social distancing, the Ministry of Home Affairs, earlier in the day, changed the rules for assistance under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), facilitating availability of money for food and temporary accommodation for migrant workers during the national lockdown. In their evening press briefing, the Health Ministry said “rigorous” contact-tracing is underway and it’s focus is to set up Covid-19 dedciated hospitals. During the press conference, an ICMR official confirmed that 44 private laboratories have been given approval so far for testing the coronavirus.

The global death toll rose to 28,687 on Saturday, with the highest number of deaths in Italy, according to John Hopkins. The number of infected people in the world rose to 614,884 around the world, with the US alone reporting over1,00,000 on Saturday. New York is still the worst-hit city in the US.
