In the recent past, local administration has started serious efforts for the growth of water sports activities here. In Jammu and Kashmir, water sports have to go a long way before it is introduced in a big way especially at the school level.

Recently officials said that Jammu and Kashmir would be hosting its first-ever indoor national rowing championship soon and will also be procuring more equipment to make J&K visible for national and international events. Government has for the first time sanctioned Rs 7 crores for the procurement of water sports equipment for the players and this is the first major contribution by the government for the growth of this sport.

Kashmir is blessed with natural water resources and has potential to provide opportunities for local youth who are bestowed with enormous natural talent and liking for water sports. Despite very little encouragement from the government so far, still the talented players from Jammu and Kashmir have made a mark at the international level in water sports. So far J&K has produced six international players in water sports category and this number can go up if the government intervenes and provides help and equipment to such players.

There is a greater need to create a platform for youth in every district of J&K and involve them in water sports and it should be done under a proper supervision of coaches. “Our youth has lot of talent and the efforts of the government will help to boost water sports in J&K.

As the international championship of water sports is very  near, the government should not waste time and appoint coaches as soon as possible so that m ore and more talented youth from Kashmir can participate at the international level in future.
