Srinagar;-The joint resistance leadership (JRL) has called for complete shutdown on February 9 and 11 across the valley to mark the anniversaries of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat respectively.

In a statement, the JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik said, “Kashmiris will observe complete shutdown on 9th and 11th February 2019 and on 10th February, Prayers will be held across the valley for these great martyrs at Masjid. On 11th February 2019, besides a complete and comprehensive shutdown, protest demonstrations will be held at Lal- Chowk Srinagar demanding the return back of mortal remains of great martyrs to their motherland for a proper burial. A memorandum will also be sent to UN secretary general, demanding the return back of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.”

Terming the “struggle and martyrdom” of Mohammad Maqbool Butt as “a glorious chapter of history”, JRL Tuesday said that his “struggle and sacrifices” will always guide us through the tough journey of “freedom struggle”.

“Maqbool Butt strived for freedom of Kashmir and kissed gallows for the sacred cause,” the JRL said in a statement.

While remembering the sacrifice rendered by “son of Kashmir” Muhammad Afzal Guru, JRL said, “Afzal kissed gallows and refused to surrender before tyranny”.

JRL said that Kashmiris will never disregard these sacrifices and will keep demanding for the mortal remains of their loved ones who remain incarcerated at Tihar Jail even after their “martyrdom.”

Pertinently Bhat was hanged and buried in Tihar jail, Delhi on Feb 11, 1984, while as Guru met the same fate on Feb 9, 2013, in the same jail.
