Srinagar, : The government has notified the fitting of speed governors in commercial vehicles to regulate their speed. However, vehicle manufacturing companies have refused to install the regulating device.
Although transporters say they have no objection in installing the speed governor they demand that only registered companies should be involved in such a process or the order should be reviewed by the government. They say in case their demand isn’t looked into they will be forced to knock the doors of the court to challenge the order.
Meanwhile, the valley-based All Commercial Transporters have appealed for revision of the government order. According to them the commercial vehicles manufactured before 2016 were not pre-installed with the speed governor. And vehicles manufactured thereafter are fitted with such devices which doesn’t cause any harm to the vehicles.
According to the transporters fitting the speed governor in a vehicle manufactured before 2016 can cause damage to the vehicle engine.
In a joint statement issued by various valley-based commercial transport associations, it was said that government issued an order in 2016 under which transporters were asked to install speed governor in their vehicles. They said the transport department was authorized to take action against the defaulters. They say the step was welcomed by the associations but owners of pre-2016 model vehicles are facing inconvenience as registered companies don’t install the device and at private workshops, they don’t give any guarantee to any damage to the vehicle.
Transporters say no company is agreeing to install the regulating device due which they are in dilemma. They say the government should look into this as this isn’t just an issue of 60, 000 vehicles but concerns 60, 000 families.
