Kashmir Killings: Protest in parts of Valley, Secretariat march foiled, shutdown to remain continue

Srinagar,): Amid shutdown and restrictions, protests were held across Kashmir valley on Monday over the fresh spree of killings in Shopian district of South Kashmir. The authorities foiled the Civil Secretariat march called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) which opened today in summer capital as part of bi-annual Darbar Move. Restrictions were imposed for the second day in parts of Valley to thwart the anti-government protests. Mobile internet blockage remained in places in several districts of Kashmir.
As a part of Civil Secretariat march programme, Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while defying his house detention tried to march towards Civil Secretariat, however, a contingent of government forces stopped him and lodged him at local police station. Police also arrested the amalgam senior leader Engineer Hilal Ahmad War from his Maisuma residence and lodged him nearby police station.
Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani remains continue under house arrest, while as other JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik was earlier on Saturday arrested by police.
Not only the pro-freedom leadership, the opposition party National Conference leaders and workers led by Ali Muhammad Sagar carried out a march from party headquarters Nawa-e-Subah to Radio Kashmir road and condemned the repeated killing of civilians in Kashmir.
Hundreds joined the march led by MLA Langate Sheikh Abdul Rasheed which started from Magharmal Bagh and proceeded towards civil Secretariat, however, a heavy contingent of police stopped the march ahead of civil secretariat’s main gate and arrested around one hundred protesters including Er. Rasheed, Dr. Bari Nayak, Prince Parvez, Zeeshan Pandith, Gh. Nabi Mir Sheeban Ashie and lodged them in Police station Rajbagh and Karan Nagar.
The traders, representing Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), assembled at Abi Guzar and tried to march towards the civil secretariat, however, police didn’t allow them. Speaking to media persons, KTMF president Muhammad Yaseen Khan said the traders are ready to suffer any losses but cannot tolerate “excesses on innocent people.”
“Police ki gundagardi, nahi chaley gi, nahi chaley gi”, Qatel-e-Aam bandh karo, “Move of Murderers”.
Meanwhile, all the shops and other business establishments, government and private offices as well remained closed all over the valley, while traffic is off the roads.
Pertinent to mention here, five civilians and five local militants were killed on Sunday during a gunfight in Shopian, a day after three LeT militants and a civilian were killed in Srinagar on Saturday.
The JRL reacting strongly over the killings had said “that on 7th of May as the darbar of the rulers who preside over our massacres and murders will open in Srinagar leadership and people including lawyers traders transporters Doctors government employees journalists and others will move towards the civil secretariat , and at around 12pm in the afternoon will sit in a peaceful dharna till the perpetrators do not agree to put an end to the daily carnage.
Meanwhile, the JRL has extended its strike call till 08 May 2018. (KNB)
