Former Australia captain Steve Smith breaks down at a press conference in Sydney held to address the ball tampering scandal that has devastated Australia and much of the cricketing world.

Struggling to control his emotions, Smith said, “I am sorry. I want to make it clear that as captain of the Australia Cricket team I take full responsibility. I made a serious error of judgment and I now understand the consequences.

“I will do everything I can do to make up for my mistake and the damage it has caused. If any good can come of this, it can be a lesson to others, and I hope can be a cause for change,” he said.

He said he would regret this all his life and said he hoped he could bear the cost of change.

He broke down and the conference was abruptly ended when he said he could see how devastated his parents were after the incident.

“I’ve been privileged & honoured to represent my country. Cricket has been my life & I hope it can be again. I’m sorry & I’m absolutely devastated. I don’t blame anyone. I’m the captain of the Australian team. It’s on my watch & I take responsibility for what happened. there was a failure of leadership, of my leadership,” Smith said. (Agencies)
