General orientation course begins at DLL, University of Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 20:  A four-week UGC-General Orientation Course for college and university teachers, being organized by UGC Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), University of Jammu, commenced here today in the Department of Lifelong Learning. This is the 4th GoC being organized for the teachers in the current year by the University of Jammu.

The course, which is being attended by around 30 university and college teachers from different parts of the country, was inaugurated by Prof Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu. Prof. J.P.Singh Joorel, Director, UGC HRDC, University of Jammu, Dr Kavita Suri, Director, Department of Lifelong Learning who is also the Course Coordinator, Dr Priyanka Sharma, Course Co-coordinator, DLL faculty members including Dr Vivek Sharma, Dr Pallavi Sachdeva, Dr Sandeep Singh were also present at the inaugural function.

Prof Keshav Sharma, while speaking on the occasion, called upon the teachers to be the torch bearers of change and inculcate the spirit of enquiry amongst their students. He exhorted upon the teachers to be exemplary figures for their students as it is their conduct, character and commitment that shall deeply reflect upon them in their academic pursuits. He also shared his views on quality concern of teachers regarding communication skills, knowledge of computer and technology, research and suggested ways to make them better academicians.

Prof JP Singh Joorel, Director HRDC, underlined the importance of such courses and the philosophy behind setting up of HRDC by UGC. He outlined the benefits of such courses for their academic growth and also discussed the need for training the young minds in higher education and also to achieve the target of acquiring good faculty members for the students.

Earlier, Dr. Kavita Suri, Course coordinator, outlined the various areas of study being covered during the four-week course. She said in the next four weeks, eminent academicians and resources persons would be delivering lectures on various themes including ethics, gender, marginalized communities, plagiarism etc, environment, service matters of teachers,  basic legal awareness, Research Methodology, Communication Skills and Information Technology, Microteaching and other topics of global importance.

Dr. Priyanka Sharma welcomed the participants to the general orientation course sponsored by UGC HRDC held at Department of lifelong learning. She also moved the vote of thanks.

In the first session, Prof Pankaj Srivastava spoke on the importance of writing research proposal while Mrs Hafiza Muzaffer who has served at various prominent positions in the state as the former Director, J&K Social Welfare Board, Secretary J&K State Commission for Women, Executive Director, J&K Rehabilitation Council, Mission Director National Mission for the empowerment of women, J&K spoke on the Global and national women’s issues and gender budgeting.
