NC Women Wing organized Breast Cancer Awareness Program

Jammu : As a part of broad initiative undertaken by the Women Wing of National Conference an awareness program on “Breast Cancer” was organized at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu today. The awareness program was conducted by Dr. Kanchan Kaur Associate Director, Breast Services, Cancer Institute, Medanta – The Medicity, New Delhi. Dr. Kanchan Kaur has trained as breast specialist centres in London, New York and Paris , Sudhanshu Sharma, Ashutosh Gupta from Mandanta were also present. Dr Kanchan Kour has been a faculty for surgical courses conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons, London. She is also a regular contributor to the website emedicine.com. She was welcomed and introduced by Provincial President of Women Wing Satwant Kaur Dogra and Rattan Lal Gupta State Vice President .
The program witnessed participation of hundreds of women from all walks of life during which discussions on breast cancer were held. The women were informed about early symptoms, signs of breast cancer, preventive measures, self examination along with high cure rates and improved cosmetic surgeries following early detection and adequate treatment.
Dr. Kanchan Kaur said that better awareness about breast cancer and its early detection can greatly reduce the need for more advanced forms of treatment like chemotherapy which is more often used in severe stages of cancer. She said that women are scared to go to the doctor for a checkup. Most symptoms of breast cancer don’t cause any pain. When they feel something wrong they ignore the earlier signs and wait longer to go for a checkup. In India, around 11.1 per cent women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Most of the cases are diagnosed either in the third or fourth stage. The survival chances for breast cancer in India are about 75 to 80 per cent.
Provincial President of Women Wing Satwant Kaur Dogra extended vote of thanks to the daughter of the soil. Dr. Kanchan Kaur and said that this is the first time that an awareness program was conducted for us. We received a lot of information about breast cancer, preventive measures and self examination. I hope that participants will surely pass on this information to their family members and friends.
