Chillai Kalan ends without a major snowfall

Srinagar: The 40-day long period of harsh winter, the ‘Chillai Kalan’ ended in the Kashmir Valley Monday, largely dry this year, without a major snowfall.
The Meterological department has, however, forecast light rain and moderate to high snowfall in the next 24 hours and said that minimum temperatures rose on Monday.
“Light rain is expected in plains and light to moderate snowfall in higher reaches in the next 24 hours”, said Sonum lotus head of Meteorology department. “As on date western disturbances are not overhead in J&K”.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.6 degree celsius during the previous night and maximum of 12.2 degree celsius in the day. Pahlagam recored a minimum of minus 2.3 and maximum of 10.4 degree celsius, Kupwara recorded a low of minus 3.4 and maximum of 10.7 degreees, Kokernag minus 2.5 and 13.5. Kargil again recorded the coldest night in the state at minus 15, followed by Leh town at minus 14.
