1300 breast, 695 prostate cancers in 4 years

Srinagar: Over the past four years 1,300 breast cancer and 695 prostate cancer cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, said the government on Wednesday.
“Prostate cancer is common in men above the age of 70 years in the state but not as common as breast cancer in females,” Health Minister Bali Baghat said in a written reply to a question of NC Legislator Mubarak Gul in the legislative assembly.
He said of 1318 cases of breast cancer reported during the last four years, 303 were reported in 2014,330 in 2015,296 in 2016 and 389 in 2017.
Similarly, 242 prostate cancer cases came to light in 2014, 273 in 2015, 75 in 2016 and 105 in 2017, he said.
In another written reply to a question by National Conference legislator Mubarak Gul in the Legislative Assembly, Health minister Bali Bhagat admitted that there was an increase in the cancer cases in the state, especially in the Valley.
He said the cancer patients are referred to institutions outside the state for radiation treatment while the regional cancer Centre at Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar has state cancer institute.
He added that the Oncology Department in the SKIMS and the Medical colleges in collaboration with other departments have been conducting public awareness programs related prostate cancer /Breast cancer and , early detection and early referral of such patients at various districts of the state.
Last week the government had informed that there was surge in cancer cases in Kashmir valley with 3521 fresh cases reported last year.
The government data presented in assembly revealed 2016 witnessed the highest number with 4976 cases, followed by 4257 in 2015, 3940 in 2014, 3288 in 2012, 3157 in 2013 and 3075 in 2011
