Srinagar: Srinagar city has remained by and large peaceful and away from the current cycle of militancy
in Kashmir. Most of the militant-related violence has been witnessed In South Kashmir. Today army and
security forces did a cordon and search operation in Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar, sending alarm bells
among the people that things are not normal in Srinagar city. Earlier, on the outskirts of Srinagar
like at Kanipora and Hyderpora, there has been some visible presence of militants.
Downtown Srinagar is at the receiving end in the current situation whenever there is a confrontation
between Joint Resistance leadership and the authorities. In the recent past whenever the Joint
Resistance leadership gave a call for protests, the district authorities of Srinagar have responded
with restrictions and curfew in most of the police stations of old city. This has resulted in a fresh
wave of fear and anger in the people. The constant restrictions in downtown Srinagar in the recent past
has reinforced the fears among the people that the situation was far from normal for them now.
The education has suffered a lot in the past few months especially in downtown Srinagar, as the
authorities responded to the student unrest and to the joint resistance leadership calls only with
restrictions and curfew in these areas. The government and private schools in downtown Srinagar
remained shutting for many days because of such growing confrontation between the authorities and joint
resistance leadership.
Downtown Srinagar is filled with pain and pathos because of the old wounds suffered by the people. It
was the most hit area during 2010 unrest when many teenagers from downtown Srinagar were killed by
police and security forces. On the economic front also, downtown Srinagar has suffered heavy losses
right from 2008 Amarnath land row agitation. The job avenues in the private sector have dried up and
with almost no tourism in the summer of 2017, Srinagar city in general is facing a huge economic
depression. In such scenario, cordon and search operation in any locality of downtown Srinagar is a
real alarm of fear and bad days ahead.
