Minor clashes erupted in Sarai Bala area of Srinagar – the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir – on Friday after police detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chief Yasin Malik.

Earlier, Malik condemned the raids conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on resistance leaders and businessmen.

During his address inside the mosque, Malik described the raid as an attempt to target the business community.

As he stepped out of the mosque, he was bundled into a Police van which enraged the people.

Muhammad Asif, 32, a businessman said: “Detaining Yasin Malik was a cowardly act by the police. We were gathered here to mourn the martyrdom of Adil Farooq who was killed in Shopian”.

The police used a stun grenade and pepper gas to disperse the crowd, but received a volley of stones from the protestors.

The people took out a spontaneous march shouting pro freedom slogans.

Addressing the media, a senior JKLF leader said: “The NIA raids were conducted because they think we are wealthy people. But the leaders are honest and this is an indigenous movement”.

With reference to slain Shopian civilian Adil Farooq, he said: “Our youth are sacrificing their lives for our future”.
